One of the largest private reserves (28 000 hectares/70 000 acres) in South Africa, Samara has a wonderful sense of space, a reminder of the insignificance of humans in comparison to the vast beauty of the Karoo.  The reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range (Snow mountains) and The Manor at Samara is nestled below the escarpment.

Samara is situated 55km outside Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa, full of charm and history as well as shops, museums, restaurants and friendly people.  Just 258km from Port Elizabeth, a city with good transportation links, Samara can be accessed by both air and road.

The luxurious, exclusive use Manor at Samara, caters for families and groups who value privacy, romance and indulgence.  This homestead has been built on the site of a Victorian farmer’s home utilizing some of the original walls.  It is unique in its warm design which reflects the local landscape and traditions whilst retaining a lovely light twist. The style of the Manor is the inspiration of well known South African designer, John Zwiegelaar.

By Road:  The recommended route from Port Elizabeth is the R75 towards Graaff-Reinet for 258km.  Turn right and take the R63 towards Pearston / Somerset East for 7km.  Turn left onto the Petersburg gravel road and drive 20km to reach the Manor House.

By Air:  Daily flights from Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.  Air charters from Port Elizabeth to Samara (gravel airstrip) can be arranged on request.

Winter Months

The Karoo experiences winter between May and September.  During these months temperatures are between a minimum of 0 degrees celcius and a maximum of 20 degrees celcius around midday.

We provide you with fleeces and hot water bottles on all game drives.  We do however advise you to bring a warm jacket and warm clothing suitable for the game drives which all take place on open safari vehicles.  It is advisable to bring some light clothing as the temperature can rise considerably during the day.

Summer Months

The summer in the Karoo can be extremely hot with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees celcius.  We recommend people bring light-weight clothing for day-wear as well as sun screen, but also include a few warmer items as the evenings can become quite chilly, dropping to lows of 10 degrees celcius.
