THE MOUNTAIN RETREAT

Print Email

One of the largest private reserves (28 000 hectares/70 000 acres) in South Africa, Samara has a wonderful sense of space, a reminder of the insignificance of humans in comparison to the vast beauty of the Karoo.

The reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range (Snow mountains) and The Mountain Retreat rests comfortably within this Samara is situated 55km outside Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa, full of charm and history as well as shops, museums, restaurants and friendly people. Just 258km from Port Elizabeth, a city with good transportation links, Samara can be accessed by both air and road.

The wild and remote Mountain Retreat is exclusive use, catering for families and groups who value privacy, enjoy being close to nature and wish to experience a slower pace of life. The Retreat was restored by the owners as their personal escape to the mountains.

CLIMATE

Winter Months

The Karoo experiences winter between May and September. During these months temperatures are between a minimum of 0 degrees celcius and a maximum of 20 degrees celcius around midday.

We provide you with fleeces and hot water bottles on all game drives. We do however advise you to bring a warm jacket and warm clothing suitable for the game drives which all take place on open safari vehicles. It is advisable to bring some light clothing as the temperature can rise considerably during the day.

Summer Months

The summer in the Karoo can be extremely hot with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees celcius. We recommend people bring light-weight clothing for day-wear as well as sun screen, but also include a few warmer items as the evenings can become quite chilly, dropping to lows of 10 degrees celcius.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Samara contains 4 of South Africa’s recognised Biomes (Thicket, Savanna, Grassland and Nama Karoo). This diversity allows a wide variety of flora and fauna to thrive.

Flora includes, ancient Shepherd’s Trees, Wild Olives, Karoo Sage and Camphor bushes, amongst others.

During their stay, visitors to Samara may be privileged to see many of the natural inhabitants of these biomes, such as:
