MALA MALA GAME RESERVE

Print Email

If the African Safari were personified, her home would be MalaMala...

MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industrys blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha, MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park and lies sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve.

For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters.

" Not even Tanzanias famed Serengeti Game Reserve or the awesome Ngorongoro Crater fills your camera viewfinder faster with Africas legendary Big Five at MalaMala, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant appear magically says acclaimed wildlife photojournalist Geoff Dalglish in his Sunday Times review. Nor could Hollywood script the wide-screen wildlife encounters any more dramatically or frequently than nature does routinely in the private game reserve that is arguably South Africas most famous internationally."

MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony.

Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound.

MAIN CAMP

The soul of MalaMala's Main Camp is tangible.

MALA MALA GAME RESERVE - Mpumalanga Province

It is present in the sepia photographs in the safari bar, reflecting the history of the area; it is present in the massive Jackalberry Tree, a silent witness in the boma from the beginning;
It is present in the faces of the staff some who have worked for the family for over 30 years;
It is present in the floodplain beyond the camp which has witnessed the changes year on year;
It is present in the granite outcrops of Sithlawayise and Campbell Koppies who stand guard over this pristine wilderness area;

It is present in the Sand River which journeys through this sanctuary supporting this dramatic eco system, but more importantly it is present in the generations of wild animals who have found solace in their home territories on MalaMala.

Every aspect of the Main Camp is designed to appreciate and enjoy the view of the surrounding wilds. Pathways wind their way along the perimeter of the camp to reveal individual ochre colored units tucked into the greenery which flanks the Sand River. Massive trees and rolling green lawns are filled with birdsong, with the occasional antelope or elephant which seeks the succulence of greenery.

The camp is unfenced - an oasis in the midst of the bushveld .

WEDDINGS

“I DO” AT MALAMALA

MalaMala offers a unique destination from which to exchange vows – one that will never be forgotten. For the couple who seeks an intimate destination, without “frills” but with a heart of warm African hospitality, beautiful sunsets, panoramic views and beautiful accommodation – MalaMala is the place for romance.

Our team of staff is on hand to assist with planning the special day.

A HONEYMOON AT MALAMALA

Following the exhausting wedding preparations and the excitement of the “Big Day”, where better to escape to than a place buried in the wild of Africa. No cell phones, no traffic, no clutter – just pure peace, silence, and unspoiled rugged bushveld.

MalaMala offers equal measures of privacy, romance, good company, romantic sunsets, action-packed game drives and excellent sumptuous cuisine.

MalaMala offers intimate accommodations with shaded decks overlooking the Sand River. Meals may be arranged in-room for private dining or in the company of other guests and staff.

We will always endeavour to accommodate honeymooners in our more remote rooms, where beautiful views and minimum disturbance are guaranteed.

Compliments of MalaMala – A bottle of sparkling wine, a shower of bougainvillea blooms and a fruit basket in the couple’s room on arrival.

INCENTIVE / GROUP PROPOSAL

The following will assist you in the planning of an incentive. Whilst the size and nature of the camps within the MalaMala Game Reserve allow for flexibility, please bear in mind that MalaMala is a wildlife sanctuary and consideration for conservation should be kept in mind.

What can delegates expect to experience at MalaMala?

DAY OF ARRIVAL

Delegates will be welcomed to MalaMala with a cool drink and the friendly smiles of the team of staff on hand to ensure every aspect of the next few days flows seamlessly. A brief orientation of the camp will serve to familiarize the members of the party as to the location of key facilities (such as the “Safari Store” for a spot of retail therapy) and their rooms.

Helpful Hint : The more information that we are able to obtain before arrival (such as passport numbers, home addresses, full names and dietary requirements), the easier and more enjoyable the check-in process.

The following three days are filled with exciting game drives (usually about 3 to 4 hours in length), sumptuous meals (lunch and breakfast are served on the deck or in the air conditioned dining room, while dinner is enjoyed in the traditional reed-enclosed boma under the stars), relaxation (either by the pool, in the sauna, or enjoying a good book in the Monkey Club Library, or in the privacy of guests rooms).

Some good ideas for consideration with the planning of a group at MalaMala Game Reserve:

THE BUSH COCKTAIL

This is a very popular choice amongst Incentive organizers. During the afternoon/ evening drive once the sun has set, the various vehicles meet up in a pre-designated area. A blazing fire is burning, a fully stocked bar is set up, and a selection of hot and cold h'ors d'oeuvres are served by the MalaMala catering team. Guests can enjoy the evening sounds whilst sipping on a relaxing drink in the company of their colleagues. Following their cocktail, guests once again board their vehicles and continue back to the camps (game-driving en route) for dinner in the boma.

This event can be left as a surprise for the guests.

“INTER-VEHICLE” COMPETITION

We suggest a bird or mammal competition on one of the game drives. Our checklists include a score next to each bird/animal variety. Each Landrover is given a “scored’ check-list which they must complete during the drive. Each animal must be seen by at least two people on the Landrover, including the ranger. At the end of the day, the score cards are handed in and prizes are given to the guests in the Landrover that obtained the maximum score. A great way of building camaraderie, encouraging team work.

RONARDSEY YOUTH CULTURAL TRADITIONAL DANCERS & AIDS ORPHANAGE CHOIR

Approximately 15 orphans, many left parentless by the AIDS pandemic which has ravaged much of Africa, will travel to MalaMala to sing and dance for the guests. Their harmony is moving. And funds go towards their costs of living. We suggest this takes place at the bush cocktail.

REPTILE DEMONSTRATION

We highly recommend this enthralling display featuring various snakes and other creepy crawlies. It is very interesting and educational and provides a fascinating insight into the behaviour and fears of these often maligned creatures. MalaMala is able to organise this demonstration on your behalf at a suitable time between game drives and other activities.

ROOM “DROPS”

Should the organizing company wish to reward delegates, it is always a nice idea to arrange for room gifts from the MalaMala Safari Store with the turn-downs each evening (while guests are on game drive, or enjoying dinner). A variety of local goods are available, including jewellery, clothing, hats, books, dvds – but to name a few. We will gladly consult with the organizers in terms of which of the items are most suited to the profiles of the attendees.

WINE LIST

Should you wish to pre-select wines, we will gladly furnish you with a comprehensive wine list.
Why is MalaMala the ideal choice for the smaller incentive market?
MalaMala’s intimate camps may be combined, or used independently for an exclusive, motivational and unique experience.
With such a large property (13 500 ha), and such low human intrusion (never more than 66 guests) – delegates are treated to the experience of a lifetime.
MalaMala’s team of staff is proficient in the game of hospitality. This allows group organizers and participants to focus on the “task” at hand, leaving all organization to the competent support structure within the respective camps.
Nature is the greatest teacher. For team building activities and motivational sessions, the bush environment works beautifully in facilitating the objectives required by many corporate companies in the contemporary environment.
MalaMala boasts a private registered airfield (AAM), and is serviced by a daily Airlink flight from Johannesburg.
This is ideal for the smaller group. Larger groups could utilize the services of private charter aircraft. The ease of access reduces the time usually spent in lengthy travels.
MalaMala’s rates are fully inclusive of accommodation, meals and activities. This ensures that no hidden costs inflate the overall expense.

THE small PRINT:
  • Whilst we will endeavor to accommodate any suggestions made by the organizers of the group in terms of activities or functions, it must be remembered that MalaMala is primarily a reserve which specializes in the preservation of the environment.
  • The bush cocktail and boma dinners are weather-dependent. It may therefore be a good idea to organize the cocktail on the second night in camp – not detracting from the first game drive, but also allowing for the opportunity to change it to the last night should bad weather (or excellent game viewing) prevail.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Please ensure that luggage is clearly labeled with the guests’ names to enable us to place it in their respective rooms prior to arrival at MalaMala Game Reserve.Should the group be occupying more than one camp, please ensure that luggage is colour-coded accordingly. Please advise if any guests will be celebrating a birthday or special occasion which you may want us to be aware of.Please advise if we should cater for any special dietary requirements. Please advise a full accounting plan in terms of which charges are to be billed back to a master account (eg beverages and communication costs), and which are to be collected from guests individually. The total cost of the reservation and any additional arrangements made is required in advance of the group’s arrival. Please note game viewing on the MalaMala Game Reserve is reserved for those guests actually accommodated in the reserve, i.e. no day trips are allowed and no other camps apart from the three MalaMala Game Reserve camps have access to the MalaMala Game Reserve.Trying to incorporate too many activities into an itinerary is not advised as guests do not have enough time to relax and enjoy the bush experience. As a private game reserve, our primary aim is to ensure that all guests experience much wildlife as possible, and as such any extra events should be seen to be a secondary enhancement to this primary aim.

CHILDREN'S PROGRAMME

"Not just five stars,” Big Five Stars". The children’s amenity and activity packs, coupled with the high tempo of sightings are superb for keeping the younger safari travellers engaged. Certainly among the most child friendly and engaging children’s safari programs on the continent today. I look forward to returning many times with my own children." Malaka Hilton, Admiral Travel (USA)

MalaMala Main Camp is the ideal family destination. Welcoming children of all ages, youngsters are able to participate in a holistic programme tailored to suit their needs.

With this program we intend to entertain children, but at the same time to educate them about the bush and the wildlife we share our lives with. Children will always be under the supervision of a responsible ranger while on the program, whether within the confines of the camp, or out in the bush.

The program is geared towards children aged 12 years and under. Activities will depend on the time of the year, and the number of days the children are with us in camp.

On arrival, the ranger looking after the family will assess the enthusiasm and level of independence of the children, and in collaboration with the parents and guardians, various activities will be designed to fill their next few days in the bush.

THE KIDDIES “KIT”

A MalaMala backpack is given to each junior ranger (between the ages of 4 and 12).

Each bag includes:
  • An interactive animal check-list
  • Bird and mammal colouring books
  • A compass
  • A thermometer
  • Lip-Ice
  • Water

SAMPLE MENU OF JUNIOR RANGER ACTIVITIES

ANIMAL TRACKING

For the curious and adventurous junior ranger. Rangers will teach their charges to follow and identify various animals out in the wild by sheer virtue of their spoor markings.

SURVIVOR CHALLENGE

Junior rangers are taught basic survival skills, such as where to find water, what plants are good to eat, medicinal and practical uses of plants (e.g. the toothbrush and loo paper trees!). This experience is great fun – hands on and educational, while arming juniors with interesting skills to take home to envious friends!

"READ THE BUSH"

Juniors are taught the warning signs of dangerous animals, and first aid skills for emergency situations in the bush.

GAME WALK

A short walk is conducted around the bustling Main Camp area. This is ideal for kids to learn more about the different rocks, trees, birds and nests in the wild. Children will also be taught how to track animals and identify the different spoor and droppings in the bush. Children will be escorted by an armed ranger.

JUNIOR CHEFS IN THE WILD

A bush breakfast enables children to learn how to make fire, and to participate in a sumptuous outdoor meal preparation.

RADIO COMMUNICATION

Children are able to learn the skills and etiquette of radio communication, as practiced on drives and out in the bush by the MalaMala rangers. This activity is enjoyed outside of game drive times.

KIDDIES CUISINE

Special meals and “ration packs” are prepared for children both in the bush, and in camp.

ACTIVITIES

The principle activity at Ivory Tree is the open vehicle safaris.

Unlike most national park game drives, ours are conducted in custom built 10 seater vehicles. Given the emphasis placed on big game viewing we have ensured that guests are allocated a dedicated ranger on arrival for the duration of their stay with us.

This enables your ranger to better understand your particular interests and permits enough time to do his/her best to ensure that Ivory Tree satisfies your requirements. Game drive times are determined by optimal animal activity periods and would be adjusted seasonally, for example, during the summer months the game drives would typically take place early in the morning (before breakfast) and late in the afternoon.

During the winter months, game drives depart later in the morning (after breakfast) and earlier in the afternoon.

There are also a numerous activities which occur in and around the Pilanesberg National Park, which include hot air ballooning, elephant back rides and golf at the nearby Sun City complex.

The reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range (Snow mountains) and The Mountain Retreat rests comfortably within this Samara is situated 55km outside Graaff-Reinet, the fourth oldest town in South Africa, full of charm and history as well as shops, museums, restaurants and friendly people. CLIMATE

Winter Months

The Karoo experiences winter between May and September. During these months temperatures are between a minimum of 0 degrees celcius and a maximum of 20 degrees celcius around midday.

We provide you with fleeces and hot water bottles on all game drives. We do however advise you to bring a warm jacket and warm clothing suitable for the game drives which all take place on open safari vehicles. It is advisable to bring some light clothing as the temperature can rise considerably during the day.

Summer Months

The summer in the Karoo can be extremely hot with temperatures reaching over 35 degrees celcius. We recommend people bring light-weight clothing for day-wear as well as sun screen, but also include a few warmer items as the evenings can become quite chilly, dropping to lows of 10 degrees celcius.
