NORTH-EASTERN SOUTH-AFRICA BIRDING TOUR: MAGOEBASKLOOF/KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

DAY 1 JHB –POLOKWANE NATURE RESERVE - MAGOEBASKLOOF


We leave Johannesburg early morning and drive north through the towns of Bela-Bela, Madimoli and stopping at the Polokwane Nature Reserve for about 3 hours of bird watching, then moving on to Magoebaskloof, where we will spend the night at Magoebaskloof Rest camp.

        

The following birds could be seen: Short-clawed Lark, Southern Black Tit, Ashy Tit, Acacia Pied Barbet, Black-collared Barbet, Crested Barbet, Marico Flycatcher, Coqui Francolin, Natal Spurfowl, Marico Sunbird, Barred Wren-Warbler, Crimson-breasted, Northern Black Korhaan, a resident pair of Secretarybird, Rufous-naped Lark, Ant-eating Chat, Lilac-breasted Roller, Desert Cisticola, Zitting Cisticola, Burnt-necked Eremomela, Long-billed Crombec, Magpie Shrike, Brubru, Red-backed Shrike, Golden-tailed Woodpecker, Cardinal Woodpecker, Violet-eared Waxbill and Black-faced Waxbill, White-browed Sparrow-Weaver, Red-throated Wryneck, Lesser Honeyguide, Scaly-feathered Finch, Black-headed Oriole, Arrow-marked Babbler and Kalahari Scrub-Robin, Verreauxs' Eagle Black-chested Snake-Eagle, Booted Eagle, Wahlberg's Eagle, Shikra and Cape Vulture.

DAY 2 MAGOEBASKLOOF

Today will be spend birding in the Woodbush Forest and the Debegeni Falls. Overnight at Magoebaskloof Rest camp.

                   

Afro-montane Forest Specials: Cape Parrot, Narina Trogon, Knysna Turaco, Emerald Cuckoo, Grey Cuckooshrike, Olive Bushshrike, Black-fronted Bushshrike, Cinnamon Dove, Square-tailed Drongo, Brown Scrub-robin, White-starred Robin, Yellow-streaked Greenbul, Green Twinspot, Olive Woodpecker, Forest Buzzard

DAY 3-6 KRUGERPARK NORTH (PUNDA MARIA)

Early this morning we will leave for the World renowned birding destination the Kruger National Park. Entering in the North at Punda Maria Gate. The Park has 500+ recorded bird species and 100+ species can be seen in a single day during summer. We will spend the night at a Rest camp in the North of the Park.

DAY 4 KRUGER PARK NORTH (PUNDA MARIA)

Today will be spent birding in the surrounding area’s.

DAY 5 KRUGER PARK CENTRAL

We will leave to travel South through the Park, viewing birds and game on route to our Rest camp for the night. (Letaba or Olifants Rest camp)

DAY 6 KRUGER PARK SOUTH

We will leave to travel South through the Park, viewing birds and game on route to our Rest camp for the night. (Skukuza/Lower Sabie Rest camp)

Additional: Night Drives for Nightjars and Owls

DAY 7: SOUTHERN KRUGERPARK TO JHB via KAAPSEHOOP

Early this morning we will leave the Park, stopping on route at Kaapsehoop area which offers protection to between nine and twelve pairs of the globally threatened Blue Swallow and is designated as an Important Bird Area.

Other birds that may be seen: Knysna Turaco, Bush Blackcap, Cape Rock-Thrush, Buff-streaked Chat, Chorister Robin-Chat, Brown Scrub-Robin, Cape Grassbird, Drakensberg Prinia, Cape Longclaw, Southern Tchagra, Bokmakierie, Olive Bush-Shrike, Gurney's Sugarbird, Southern Double-collared Sunbird, Swee Waxbill, Forest Canary, Blue Swallow, Red-throated Wryneck, Mountain Wagtail, Barratt's Warbler, Mocking Cliff-Chat, Familiar Chat, Lazy Cisticola, Wing-snapping Cisticola, Red-necked Spurfowl, Red-winged Francolin, Swainson's Spurfowl, Black-winged Lapwing, Black-rumped Buttonquail, Blue-mantled Crested-Flycatcher, Lemon Dove, Olive Thrush, Orange Ground-Thrush, Narina Trogon, Grey Cuckooshrike, Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler, African Goshawk and African Wood-Owl.

Upon leaving Kaapsehoop, we then travel to Johannesburg, arriving late afternoon.
