9 DAY 8 NIGHT SOUTHERN KRUGER, SWAZILAND, NORTHERN KWAZULU NATAL AND GRASSLAND BIRDING TOUR

DAY 1 JHB – SOUTHERN KRUGER PARK

We leave Johannesburg early morning and drive east towards the Kruger National Park stopping at Kaapsehoop. The Kaapsehoop area offers protection to between nine and twelve pairs of the globally threatened Blue Swallow and is designated as an Important Bird Area.

The following birds could be seen: Knysna Turaco, Bush Blackcap, Cape Rock-Thrush, Buff-streaked Chat, Chorister Robin-Chat, Brown Scrub-Robin, Cape Grassbird, Drakensberg Prinia, Cape Longclaw, Southern Tchagra, Bokmakierie, Olive Bush-Shrike, Gurney's Sugarbird, Southern Double-collared Sunbird, Swee Waxbill, Forest Canary, Blue Swallow, Red-throated Wryneck, Mountain Wagtail, Barratt's Warbler, Mocking Cliff-Chat, Familiar Chat, Lazy Cisticola, Wing-snapping Cisticola, Red-necked Spurfowl, Red-winged Francolin, Swainson's Spurfowl, Black-winged Lapwing, Black-rumped Buttonquail, Blue-mantled Crested-Flycatcher, Lemon Dove, Olive Thrush, Orange Ground-Thrush, Narina Trogon, Grey Cuckooshrike, Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler, African Goshawk and African Wood-Owl.
Accommodation: Rest camp in Kruger National Park.

DAY 2: SOUTHERN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

A world renowned birding destination the Kruger National Park has 500+ recorded bird species. 100+ species can be seen in a single day during summer. We will spent all day birding in Kruger
Accommodation: Rest camp in Kruger National Park.

DAY 3: KRUGER TO SWAZILAND

Early morning we will leave the Kruger National Park and travel to Mabuda Farm (Swaziland) in the Lebombo Mountains via Hlane National Park with 400 recorded bird species and the most southern resident nesting Marabou Stork population.

DAY 4: MABUDA FARM, SITEKI (SWAZILAND)

The day will be spent Bird Watching in the area.
Birds in the area: Pink-throated Twinspots, Livingston’s Turaco, White-eared Barbet, Gorgeous Bush-shrike, Dark-backed Weaver, Eastern Nicator
Accommodation: Mabuda Farm B&B

DAY 5 & 6: SWAZILAND TO MKUZE NATIONAL PARK

We will leave after breakfast travelling south through Swaziland to Kwa-Zulu Natal to Mkuze Game Reserve. Mkuze Game Reserve is definitely among the top ten birding spots in Southern Africa. It boasts a list of over 450 species, a wide range of habitats, and relatively easy access to most areas. Southern Banded Snake-Eagle, Pel's Fishing-Owl, Broad-billed Roller, African Broadbill, Flappet Lark, Eastern Nicator, Olive-tree Warbler, Rudd's Apalis, Gorgeous Bush-Shrike, Neergaard's Sunbird, Pink-throated Twinspot, African Pygmy-Goose and Dwarf Bittern.

DAY 7: MKUZE TO WAKKERSTROOM

We leave Mkuze early morning travelling to the Famous Wakkerstroom Birding area via Itala Game Reserve where we will have a brief stop.

DAY 8: WAKKERSTROOM

The Wakkerstroom/Amersfoort area is famous among birders as the easiest area to find three highly endemic species restricted to South Africa's high altitude grasslands - Rudd's Lark, Botha's Lark and Yellow-breasted Pipit. A total of 13 bird species are endemic or nearly so to South Africa's Grassland Biome and nine of these, including Rudd's Lark, Botha's Lark, Yellow-breasted Pipit, Southern Bald Ibis, Blue Korhaan, Eastern Long-billed Lark, Sentinel Rock-Thrush, Buff-streaked Chat and Drakensberg Prinia can easily be found here during a full day's birding in summer. We will use local Birdlife guides with their experienced Lark and Cisticola identification skills for part of today.

DAY 9: WAKKERSTROOM TO JHB

We will leave Wakkerstroom heading back to Johannesburg via Marievale Bird Sanctuary. Marievale Bird Sanctuary lies within the Blesbokspruit catchment and is a Ramsar Convention Wetland site. The sanctuary has a good number of wetland and grassland species, with a total list of over 280 species, and has become a magnet for twitchers as rare species are frequently reported. Being within easy reach of Johannesburg, it is a popular birding destination. A good variety of waders, including African Rail, Baillon's Crake, African Snipe and Greater Painted-snipe are often recorded. Good highveld birds include Goliath Heron, Black Heron, Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Marsh Owl, Long-tailed Widowbird and Fan-tailed Widowbird. The area is also famous for rarities such as Slaty Egret, Pallid Harrier, Montagu's Harrier, Western Marsh-Harrier, Spotted Crake, Pectoral Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit and Red Phalarope, which have turned up in the recent past.

Upon leaving Marievale, we then travel back to Johannesburg, arriving late afternoon.
